Sunday 22nd October was the day for the second round ties of this season’s Scottish Cup, and I went along to Old Annieland where three games were played.

First on was a thrilling game between two Division 1 men’s teams, and indeed local rivals. Western Wildcats had to fight hard to maintain their season’s unbeaten record against a Hillhead team which was encouraged by their win of the previous day. In the end Wildcats managed the odd goal in five to progress into the round three draw.

Two women’s games followed with Division 1 teams facing lower league visitors. Hillhead’s Ladies had the trickiest task as they’d drawn Merlins Gordonians, the leaders of National Division 2. The upset didn’t come however, a goal in each half was enough to see Hillhead through.

The final game was between GHK and Stirling Wanderers of the Women’s championship Division 2. Experience showed in this game as the hosts eased to a 3-0 win.

There was a crunch game lower down the Division 1 table on Saturday 21st as Hillhead men took on Uddingston at Old Anniesland.

This started as a slow game and well into the second half it looked like it could still finish as a scoreless draw. Suddenly Hillhead found some goalscoring form and late in the game they forced in four quick goals without reply.

The win gave Hillhead their first league points of the season and the chance to start climbing up the table.

Two games at Auchenhowie on 14th October as the Western WIldcats and Grange men and women’s first teams met in league games.

For the men, both teams were unbeaten in the season.  It was to be a continual back and forward game. Wildcats opened the scoring but later they had to equalise twice on the way to a 3-3 draw which left the teams still sharing top spot in the division.

Wildcats women were clear 3-0 winners over the promoted team, Grange EL. It wasn’t a one sided game though. The visitors put Western under a lot of pressure and contributed to a very entertaining game. With five wins out of five, Wildcats women are top of Division 1.

In slightly better weather than the boys had the previous weekend, the girl’s Interdistricts were played at Glasgow Green on 30 September/1 October.

In the under 18’s Midland came top of the round robin competition, ahead of East and South.
The under 16s was played to a final. This saw East win in a shoot out against West after they’d drawn level with a late goal in regulation time.

This year’s tournament was played at Glasgow Green on the weekend of 23-24th September, and was completed despite the problem of heavy rain on the Sunday.

East District did the double, taking both the under 16 and under 18 crowns in the league system. West District were runners up in both events.

The first round of the 2017/18 Scottish Cup brought together what most think are two of Scotland’s top five women’s teams for a tie at Auchenhowie on 17th September.

The game was as close as expected. The final score was 1-1 and the penalty shoot-out that followed went to sudden death before the home side came out victorious.

So, the Wildcats proceed to the next round, Clydedale Western are immediately installed as favourites to win the consolation Plate cometition.

Glasgow and Aberdeen were the two teams which qualified for the Division 2 play-offs from the North-North Divisionand, as fate had it, the fixtures landed in the way which had them meet for the fourth time in the season. The game was played at Nethercraigs on 20 August.

As usual it was a hard fought game between these two. The visitors let by 6-5 at one point but the Tigers came through in the end to win by 17-6. They’ll now travel to Leeds Bobcats for their next game.

There were two unbeaten teams after the regular season of the BAFA’s under 19 North Division this year and they met at Hamilton Rugby Club on 19th August for the right to play against the southerm champions at Britbowl a week later.

The Pirates made a strong start and by the third quarter their offence, defense and special teams had all contributed touchdowns towards a 20-0 lead. The final quarter saw a strong comeback by the visitors though and it took a major effort by the EKP defence to hold on for a final scoreline of 20-12.

The second level nations championship was played at Glasgow Green from 6-12th August, with twenty matches played over the week. The biggest prize of the tournament wasn’t the trophy, it was the two promotion places to the top level championship in 2019 which the finalists would earn.

The opening group stages saw Wales and Scotland finish on top, and it was these teams who went on to win their semi-finals and win the promotion places. The third place match was won by France, beating Russia 5-4, before Scotland produced a late comeback in the final to beat the Welsh 2-1 and be crowned champions.
