Hawks v County
I headed to Old Anniesland on 4th April on behalf of SPN for the last game of the BT Premiership season, the previously postponed Glasgow Hawks v Stirling County. This was a crucial game for both clubs, Stirling were 3rd from bottom of the table before the game, Hawks second from bottom. The points on offer were vital, the winner would secure their place in the Premiership next season, the losers face a promotion/relegation play-off game against GHA.

Hawks scored the opening try but two penalties for Stirling saw them hold a 6-5 half time lead. A second try for Hawks put them back in the lead but that was immediately matched by Stirling. Hawks took the lead for the final time with a penalty and then a third try and held on at the end to win by 22-16.

I visited at my old stomping ground of Giffnock on Saturday 14th to cover this BT National League Division 1 match at Braidholm for SPN.

GHA are well on the way to a play-off place for promotion this season, but after a poor first half performance they found themselves 10-0 down. I found myself short of pictures since I’d been at the wrong end for most of the action. In the second half I was up and about chasing photo opportunities while GHA chased the result. In the end I got some photos and GHA managed to score a last minute try to steal the game by 12-10.

While I was at Braidholm on 7th September I stayed on for this National League game.

Both teams had lost their opening two fixtures of the season, so this was important. It was the visitors from the Borders who were able to break away from the foot of the table. Selkirk dominated the first half, kept up the pressure in the second, and won by 45-10.

Cumbernauld v Lenzie

The last day of Scottish Rugby’s West League Division 2 saw my local team, Lenzie, travel to Cumbernauld on 11 May 2013. They secured a 16-8 win, second place in the final table and promotion to Division 1 for next season.

Lenzie v CumbernauldThese local rivals met in a West Region Div 2 game at Lenzie on 2nd March.

Lenzie, who hold a much higher league position, started favourites and took the lead early on with a penalty. Cumbernauld fought back hard however, scoring two tries before half time and another soon after, to lead 19-3. A Lenzie comeback followed and they got to within a point before Cumbernauld added a final penalty and clinched a 22-18 win.

The win keeps Cumbernauld clear of the relegation zone, while the loss has dented Lenzie’s promotion hopes.

Lenzie v Stewartry Weeks of freezing conditions fave been replaced by days of rain. Despite being really soft, the pitch at Viewfield was declared playable on December 29th and the game between two of the leading teams in West Division 2 went ahead.

The home side opened the scoring with a first half penalty, but the game was close right up to the last minute when a try secured the win for Lenzie by 17-8.

The light was poor during this game, so the photos will not print well at larger sizes.

I hadn’t covered a Rugby Union game for a while, so I took a drive over the hill to Fintry where one of my local teams, Strathendrick, was playing against Wigtownshire, who were my local club when I was a boy. Endrick were well in control all the way through the game and won comfortably by 57-0.
