The Clydesdale Western men and womens’ Division 1 teams both travelled over the Clyde (or maybe through the tunnel) on 8th September for fixtures at Old Anniesland.

The women were visiting GHK who had started their season with a win the previous week. The hosts couldn’t match the strength of Western girls however as the visitors took the win by 3-1.

Hillhead were the home team for the mens game and this was the opening fixture of the league season for both. It looked like a second half goal for Clydesdale was going to be enough to clinch it but Hillhead managed a late equaliser which earned a share of the points.

On the first weekend of the new season two teams expected to do well in the Women’s first division met at Auchenhowie and palyed out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

It was the Wildcats who had the best of the first half and they held the half time lead at 1-0. The visitors turned things around after the break. A quick goal was followed by a second and it looked like the Western girls were heading for an away win until they were thwarted by late Wildcats equaliser.

28. August 2018 · Comments Off on Inverclyde Goliaths v Highland Stags · Categories: American Football, Photo Set

I had the opportunity to see two new teams on 25th August at Parklea playing fields at Port Glasgow. The hosts were Inverclyde Goliaths, who are working towards earning admission to the BAFA leagues for next season, as are the visiting Highland Stags.
The game they put on would certainly be worthy of BAFA Division 2. In the first half the Stags were well on top but there was a major change round after the interval as the Goliaths came roaring back to win by 42-25. I hope I get to see more of these teams in the future.

Following their 10-0 win of a fortnight earlier Mid Argyll faced an altogether harder task at Yoker on 4th August. The visitors were Kilmallie, the National Division leaders and Camanachd Cup semi-finalists.
The teams produced as exciting a game as I’ve seen for a while. After Glasgow took the lead mid way through the first half it was Kilmallie who led 3-2 going into the last few minutes. Despite employing time wasting tactics however they couldn’t hold on as the hosts snatched an equalising goal with two minutes left to play.
The result leaves the teams in first and third places in their division.

Tamworth Phoenix clinched the BAFA Premiership North Division on 22nd July with a comfortable 45-0 win over Edinburgh Wolves at Peffermill. They took the lead with a touchdown on their first drive and, while Edinburgh kept the Phoenix lead to 13 points in the first half, the game was all Phoenix after the break.

Tamworth are now 8-0 for the season while the Wolves have a 4-5 record with one game left to play.

The Roughnecks are having a dominant season in NFC 2 North division. They came to Wishaw to face the Blackhawks on 15th July with the division title already clinched and were looking to maintain their perfect 6-0 record to maximise their advantage come play-off time.

The first half was close. The score was tied at one and two touchdowns each before Aberdeen went off at halftime with a 21-14 lead. Clyde Valley didn’t manage to score in the second half so the game was lost. They did restrict the Roughnecks to one very lucky touchdown but there was a safety and a field goal too and the lead stretched to 33-14 by the final whistle.

Scotland men hosted the USA team for a three game series at Glasgow Green from 8 to 11th July.
Game 1 on Sunday saw the teams exchange early goals before Scotland got on top in the second half and went on to win by 3-1.
On Monday evening the game was a sort of mirror image. There was a goal to each side early on but then it was the Americans who went on to win by 3-1.
The deciding game of the series on Wednesday failed to decide it. Scotland had a very early lead but the USA equalised after half time and the game, and the series, played out at 1-1.

The Pirates last home game of the season, and pretty much their last opportunity to escape demotion from the BAFA Premier Division, was at GHA on 8th July as they hosted the Nighthawks.  The visitors are also having a bad season, but at least they already had one win under their belt.
The game began as a close contest as the teams exchanged opening touchdowns. As the game went on however East Kilbride couldn’t match Merseyside’s big play abilities and the win went south on a 25-12 scoreline.

After these sided had drawn 4-4 the previous evening they served up an exciting morning game at Titwood on 24th June.

Scotland held a 1-0 lead through the first half but the English kept pace, equalising each time the Scots took the lead. The final score was 3-3.

These two team have developed a rivalry over the last few years, going back to when they were still in Division 1. Their Premier Division meeting at Peffermill on 23rd June continued this.
The game started with the Nighthawks marching downfield and scoring on their first posession. Edinburgh then dod the same on thheir next posession and went on to lead 13-6 at halftime. Early in the third the Nighthawks equalised, but they started to lose ground from there as the hosts went on to record a 46-19 win.
