The university football season has come round again and Scotland has two teams in BUCS Division 1 this year. The two met on 12th November as the newly promoted Napier Knights came to Garscube.

The game started in a promising fashion. Glasgow scored after a strong opening drive only for Napier to run back the following kick off for their own touchdown. As the game went on the Tigers’ experience showed though. They led 28-6 at half time and, with a number of back-up players in for the second half, went on to win 35-12.

Grove Menzieshill men were back in the Glasgow area for the second Saturday running when they played Hillhead at Old Anniesland on 11 November.

Hillhead have been recovering after a poor start to their season but this was a day where the visitors were just too strong for them. It was a hard fought game but the men from Dundee came out with a 2-1 win.

The result leaves Menzieshill level on points with second placed Kelburne in the table. three points behind Grange. Hillhead stay in 7th place.

At Old Anniesland on 11th November GHK women hosted Kelburne in a Division 1 match.

Kelburne have been struggling this season after an upheaval at the club cost them several regular players and they’ve lost all of their games so far. GHK are themselves a low in the table team but they took this one by 4-0 to keep them 7th in the table.

Another top of Scottish Hockey’s Division 1 double header at Auchenhowie on 4th November as teams from the top four of both the men’s and women’s leagues met in games sponsored by AMS Disposables.

It was a successful day for the visitors from Dundee. The men’s team outfired a Wildcats side which was weakened by injury and came away with a 5-2 win. The second game was just as comfortable for the Grove ladies as they came through to win 3-0.

Sunday 22nd October was the day for the second round ties of this season’s Scottish Cup, and I went along to Old Annieland where three games were played.

First on was a thrilling game between two Division 1 men’s teams, and indeed local rivals. Western Wildcats had to fight hard to maintain their season’s unbeaten record against a Hillhead team which was encouraged by their win of the previous day. In the end Wildcats managed the odd goal in five to progress into the round three draw.

Two women’s games followed with Division 1 teams facing lower league visitors. Hillhead’s Ladies had the trickiest task as they’d drawn Merlins Gordonians, the leaders of National Division 2. The upset didn’t come however, a goal in each half was enough to see Hillhead through.

The final game was between GHK and Stirling Wanderers of the Women’s championship Division 2. Experience showed in this game as the hosts eased to a 3-0 win.

There was a crunch game lower down the Division 1 table on Saturday 21st as Hillhead men took on Uddingston at Old Anniesland.

This started as a slow game and well into the second half it looked like it could still finish as a scoreless draw. Suddenly Hillhead found some goalscoring form and late in the game they forced in four quick goals without reply.

The win gave Hillhead their first league points of the season and the chance to start climbing up the table.
