Scotland women will be playing in the European Championships in Amsterdam on 18-27th August. Their final preparation test matches at Glasgow Green were played over the weekend of 28 to 31 July against a France team who had several youngsters in the squad.

I was at game one on Friday night and game three on Monday morning. France opened the scoring early in the first game, but that was their only goal of the weekend while Scotland scored four in each game to win the series comfortably.

In the run up to the European Championships in Amsterdam in August, Scotland women played a series of three informal games against Russia over the weekend 20-23rd July. I made it to two of the games.

On the Thursday night at Titwood the Scots built an early two goal lead only to have the game drift away from them. The Russians won 4-2. Saturday at Glasgow Green followed a similar pattern. Scotland opened the scoring but went on to lose 2-1.

The Irish under 16 and under 18 girls came across for a series of three games each against Scotland at Glasgow Green on 7-9th July. I was at the first two games of each series.

The Irish under 16s started their first game well and led 1-0 at half time. However they succumbed to a Scottish comeback and lost 2-1. The second game finished at 0-0.

The under 18 games weren’t so close. The visitors won game one by a comfortable 3-0 and after losing a first minute goal in the second game they went on to win 3-1.

The Sunday games, which i missed, went to form with wins for Scotland under 16s and Ireland under 18s.

With a European tournament coming up in Prague next week the Under 21 ladies team played warm up games against a Welsh under 23 development side at Glasgow Green on the 3, 5 & 6th July.
I missed the first game but was there to see the Scots win game two by 3-1 before the Welsh put together a better performance and won the final game by the same scoreline.

To start a busy summer international season with two major tournaments, Scotland women played Wales in a three match series at Glasgow Green over the May 26-29th weekend.

Wales started the first game brightly, had the majority of play and despite a late scare came through to win 2-1. Scotland came back with a stronger performance in game two but they still came up short as Wales won by the only goal of the game. The final game saw Scotland’s best performance. However they still let an early lead slip and then lost to a late Welsh winner.

These were good performances by the Welsh girl. They must be delighted with their performance and they’re certainly a team to watch in future. meantime, it’s not time to not panic about the Scotalnd performances. I didn’t think the strongest team was played in any of these games. Lots to think about and work on though.

The final weekend of the club hockey season featured play-offs, for places in European competitions for the top teams and for the last places in Division 1 next season for the bottom teams. On Saturday 6th May I was at Old Annisland to see two games.

Hillhead men who finished 7th in the first division played Inverleith, the Division 2 runners up. Hillhead took an early lead but had to fight to hold on for a 4-3 win against a strong comeback from Inverleith. The Edinburgh side took their second chance the next day when they beat Watsonians for the last slot in the top division.

The second game was Clydesdale Western v Grove Menzieshill, the second and third finishers in Women’s Division 1. This was a close game throughout and it seemed like it was likely to go to a shoot-out until a late Western goal gave them a 2-1 win and a place in the final against Edinburgh University the next day.

It was the Women’s turn for Cup Final day on 30th April at Glasgow Green.

The first game saw Glasgow success as the Academicals ladies were winners by 2-1 over Granite City Wanderers 2s by 2-1

There were no local teams, but definitely¬† a local rivalry in the District Cup final as both teams had made the long journey from the Northern Isles. Orkney’s experience in having played in finals in recent years showed as they were 3-0 victors over Shetland.

It’s been a long season for CALA Edinburgh who lost every game of their league campaign and were relegated. They now have some consolation after winning the Plate final by 4-0 over Glasgow University.

Edinburgh University completed the league and cup double in the last game of the weekend. Clydesdale Western opened the scoring but Uni replied with two of their own and then comfortably held off their rivals to win the cup for the second year running.

The girl’s tournament was played as a round robin and it was won by Clydesdale Western who completed a clean sweep of four wins from four. Watsonians were classified second.

Grange were the winners of the boys cup, beating Western Wildcats 2-1 in the final. Perthshire saw off their local rivals Grove Menzieshill by 4-1 to take third place.

Top four finishes and a place in the Division One play-offs were on the minds of both Western Wildcats teams at Auchenhowie on 1st April.
The men’s team were first up and produced a strong performance to defeat Uddingston 3-0. The win leap-frogged them above Uddy into the coveted fourth place in the league with two games left to play.
The Wildcats womens team, who have already secured their fourth place, hosted the team ahead of them, Clydesdale Western, in the following game. This was a tight game with both teams seeming to play below their best. The visitors won, scoring the game’s only goal just after half time.

While the men’s semi-finals were being played on the main pitch at Peffermill on 26th February a top of the Women’s DIvision 1 clash was relegated to the back pitch. A tight game saw Edinburgh University put an end to the Western girls unbeaten record with a 1-0 win which puts them into first place in the division. Western are down to third, four points behind but with two games in hand.
