The second level nations championship was played at Glasgow Green from 6-12th August, with twenty matches played over the week. The biggest prize of the tournament wasn’t the trophy, it was the two promotion places to the top level championship in 2019 which the finalists would earn.

The opening group stages saw Wales and Scotland finish on top, and it was these teams who went on to win their semi-finals and win the promotion places. The third place match was won by France, beating Russia 5-4, before Scotland produced a late comeback in the final to beat the Welsh 2-1 and be crowned champions.

The under 16 boys played a three game series against their counterparts from Ulster at Glasgow Green over the weekend of 23-25th March. I made it along to the Friday night game.

The Scottish boys proved to be a much stronger team in this game. They produced a dominant performance and strolled to a 10-0 win.

The final weekend of the club hockey season featured play-offs, for places in European competitions for the top teams and for the last places in Division 1 next season for the bottom teams. On Saturday 6th May I was at Old Annisland to see two games.

Hillhead men who finished 7th in the first division played Inverleith, the Division 2 runners up. Hillhead took an early lead but had to fight to hold on for a 4-3 win against a strong comeback from Inverleith. The Edinburgh side took their second chance the next day when they beat Watsonians for the last slot in the top division.

The second game was Clydesdale Western v Grove Menzieshill, the second and third finishers in Women’s Division 1. This was a close game throughout and it seemed like it was likely to go to a shoot-out until a late Western goal gave them a 2-1 win and a place in the final against Edinburgh University the next day.

Scottish Hockey’s men’s cup finals were played at Glasgow Green on 29th April.

The day started with the Reserve finals. In the Cup Grange 3s won against Hillhead 3s with the only goal of a tight game. Meantime, in a much more open game on pitch 2, Grove Menzieshill 3s took the Plate with a 5-2 victory over Watsonians 3s.

There was more success for the Grange club as their second team were victorious over Watsonians 2s by 4-1 to take the District Cup. In another all-Edinburgh game Edinburgh University 2s saw off Erskine Stewart’s Melville 2s by the same scorline to take the Plate.

The senior Plate final saw the on-form Western Wildcats continue the great run they’ve been having with a comfortable win over Watsonians. The scoreline was again 4-1.

After last week’s disaster for Grange, when they let the league title slip through their fingers, there was the chance for then to get revenge over Kelburne. It wasn’t to be however, Kelburne were never behind and took the cup with a decisive 5-2 win.

On the final Saturday of the Scottish League the men’s champions was to be decided in Edinburgh. Grange started in pole position. They had a one point lead and a win over Western Wildcats at Fettes would confirm them as champions. It was going well for them when they took a two goal lead in the second half. Then at all went wrong. The Wildcats came back with a three goal burst, securing their own top four finish and leaving the title race open.

Grange’s defeat left the door open for Kelburne to steal the title by beating Edinburgh University across the city at Peffermill. A goal in each half proved enough and it was Kelburne who finished the day celebrating, their 13th consecutive title.

Scottish Hockey held the under 16s Scottish Club Cup Finals at Glasgow Green on a bright but cold 2nd April.

The girl’s tournament was played as a round robin and it was won by Clydesdale Western who completed a clean sweep of four wins from four. Watsonians were classified second.

Grange were the winners of the boys cup, beating Western Wildcats 2-1 in the final. Perthshire saw off their local rivals Grove Menzieshill by 4-1 to take third place.

Top four finishes and a place in the Division One play-offs were on the minds of both Western Wildcats teams at Auchenhowie on 1st April.
The men’s team were first up and produced a strong performance to defeat Uddingston 3-0. The win leap-frogged them above Uddy into the coveted fourth place in the league with two games left to play.
The Wildcats womens team, who have already secured their fourth place, hosted the team ahead of them, Clydesdale Western, in the following game. This was a tight game with both teams seeming to play below their best. The visitors won, scoring the game’s only goal just after half time.

Gordonians came down from Aberdeen to Glasgow on 26th March and came away with only their second win of the season. The 2-1 win over Hillhead at Old Anniesland leaves them still at the bottom of the table but now within four points of Clydesdale and with a chance of fighting their way up from the automatic relegation place. Hillhead meantime are only three points ahead of ‘dale and the relegation play-off place.

The semi-finals of the two senior competitions were played at Peffermill on 26th February.

In the Plate two Division 1 teams won over lower division opposition. Western Wildcats quickly built a lead over Perthshire and eased to an 7-1 win. It took Watsonians much longer to break down Greenock Morton but a late goal flurry saw them through as 5-1 winners.

The favourites for the cup, Kelburne, were made to struggle by Edinburgh University who had taken an early lead and then scored in the last second to finish the game at 2-2. It was Kelburne who triumphed in the shoot-out that followed. The expected close game between Grange and Grove Menzieshill didn’t materialise as Grange scored early and often and sauntered to an 8-1 win.
