The second level nations championship was played at Glasgow Green from 6-12th August, with twenty matches played over the week. The biggest prize of the tournament wasn’t the trophy, it was the two promotion places to the top level championship in 2019 which the finalists would earn.

The opening group stages saw Wales and Scotland finish on top, and it was these teams who went on to win their semi-finals and win the promotion places. The third place match was won by France, beating Russia 5-4, before Scotland produced a late comeback in the final to beat the Welsh 2-1 and be crowned champions.

Scotland women will be playing in the European Championships in Amsterdam on 18-27th August. Their final preparation test matches at Glasgow Green were played over the weekend of 28 to 31 July against a France team who had several youngsters in the squad.

I was at game one on Friday night and game three on Monday morning. France opened the scoring early in the first game, but that was their only goal of the weekend while Scotland scored four in each game to win the series comfortably.

In the run up to the European Championships in Amsterdam in August, Scotland women played a series of three informal games against Russia over the weekend 20-23rd July. I made it to two of the games.

On the Thursday night at Titwood the Scots built an early two goal lead only to have the game drift away from them. The Russians won 4-2. Saturday at Glasgow Green followed a similar pattern. Scotland opened the scoring but went on to lose 2-1.

The Irish under 16 and under 18 girls came across for a series of three games each against Scotland at Glasgow Green on 7-9th July. I was at the first two games of each series.

The Irish under 16s started their first game well and led 1-0 at half time. However they succumbed to a Scottish comeback and lost 2-1. The second game finished at 0-0.

The under 18 games weren’t so close. The visitors won game one by a comfortable 3-0 and after losing a first minute goal in the second game they went on to win 3-1.

The Sunday games, which i missed, went to form with wins for Scotland under 16s and Ireland under 18s.

With a European tournament coming up in Prague next week the Under 21 ladies team played warm up games against a Welsh under 23 development side at Glasgow Green on the 3, 5 & 6th July.
I missed the first game but was there to see the Scots win game two by 3-1 before the Welsh put together a better performance and won the final game by the same scoreline.

The under 16 boys played a three game series against their counterparts from Ulster at Glasgow Green over the weekend of 23-25th June. I made it along to the Friday night game.

The Scottish boys proved to be a much stronger team in this game. They produced a dominant performance and strolled to a 10-0 win.

To start a busy summer international season with two major tournaments, Scotland women played Wales in a three match series at Glasgow Green over the May 26-29th weekend.

Wales started the first game brightly, had the majority of play and despite a late scare came through to win 2-1. Scotland came back with a stronger performance in game two but they still came up short as Wales won by the only goal of the game. The final game saw Scotland’s best performance. However they still let an early lead slip and then lost to a late Welsh winner.

These were good performances by the Welsh girl. They must be delighted with their performance and they’re certainly a team to watch in future. meantime, it’s not time to not panic about the Scotalnd performances. I didn’t think the strongest team was played in any of these games. Lots to think about and work on though.

The first steps for lower ranked teams to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in India are the World League round 1 tournaments which have been played around the world. Scotland’s men had home advantage for their round as the tournament was played at Glasgow Green between the 6th and 11th September. The tournament featured five teams playing a round-robin competition with the top two qualifying for the next round.

National Hockey Centre, Glasgow GreenThe tournament came to a climax on the Sunday afternoon as Scotland met Wales in the final match. Both teams were unbeaten in the tournament and had already qualified for the next round. Scotland, who hadn’t conceded a goal all week, found themselves two behind after only a few minutes and 3-1 down at halftime. The Scots pulled one back in the second half but it was Wales who held out to secure the first place trophy.

Of the visiting teams Switzerland classified third were ahead of Portugal and Slovakia.
