Scotland women are playing a three game series against the World Cup bound Italians at Glasgow Green from 12 to 15th June.

In game one on Tuesday night Italy opened the scoring just after half time. There was a strong fightback however and Scotland fought through to win 2-1.
Game two on Thursday lunchtime was blown open in the second quarter by a burst of three goals in eight minutes for the Italians. Once again, Scotland fought back in the second half but this time they could only bring the score back to 3-2.
Scotland finally got off to a good start in the final game on Friday night. However, after their early goal they fell behind by 2-1 and it took a late equaliser to save the game. This left the series tied and the shoot-out was played to decide the winner, and that went Scotland’s way.

The last weekend of the club hockey season over the 12/13th May saw the top four men’s and women’s teams play off for the right to play in European competitions next year, and for the lower Division 1 and top Division 2 teams sort out promotion and relegation.
On the Saturday I was at Glasgow Green where Grove Menzieshill men’s 3-1 win  put an end to Kelburne’shopes of a trophy this year. After that it was the turn of Grove Menzieshill women, but they finished on the wrong side of a 3-1 result as Clydesdale Western earned their place in the Grand Final.

Back to Glasgow Green on the Sunday for four matches. First up saw a game between two Edinburgh teams playing for the last place in Women’s Division 1 next season. It was close in the end at a scoreline of 2-1 but Grange were on top for most of the game against promotion hopefuls Inverleith. The mens game that followed wasn’t so close. Uddingston dominated and condemned Dundee Wanderers to relegation by 6-1.

In the first of the Grand Finals Edinburgh University women took a first half lead against Clydesdale Western. They didn’t capitalise on their dominance however and later in the second half the Western girls managed to get back into the game, their equalising goal forcing a sudden death shoot out. It was University who won the shoot-out with a clinical performance and they had completed the League/Cup/Grand Final treble.
In the men’s Grand Final it was Grange who were chasing the same treble. It wasn’t to be however as Grove Menzieshill were on top for most of the game and it finished with yet another 3-1 scoreline.

After clinching the league title the previous weekend Grange’s men did the double by winning the Scottish Cup at Glasgow Green on May 5th.
They had started as clear favourites and immediately showed why as they scored in the first twenty seconds and again a couple of minutes later. It could have been that the game was as good as over but Edinburgh University put up a good fight and made a game of it. Grange ran out comfortable winners though by 6-3.

In other games I got to, Edinburgh Uni teams won both the District and Reserve plate Finals while the Scottish Plate Final went to Gordonians with a 5-1 win over Stepps. Full reports are on the Scottish Hockey website.

Saturday 28th April was the final day of the league season and both championships were up for grabs.

I started the day at Uddingston where Kelburne needed a win to secure their 14th consecutive title. Kelburne started nervously and found themselves 2-0 down at half time. A fight back followed and they fought back to take a 3-2 lead with five minutes left. The title looked to be heading their way until the last minute when Uddingston scored from a penalty corner and snatched a draw. In a reverse of last year’s events, attention switched to Edinburgh where Grange went on to win their game and take the league title.

I then made my way to Auchenhowie where Edinburgh University women also needed a win to secure the championship. Their task should have been trickier as the opposition was third placed Western Wildcats, however three goals scored in the first half let them coast to a 3-1 win.

The Wildcats v University men’s game followed in which the home team, already qualified for the play-offs with fourth place in the division, saw off the students by 4-1.

Two teams fighting for survival in the lower reaches of Women’s Division 1 met on what felt like the first sunny day of the year at Old Anniesland on 21st April. On the strength of the better first half the home team, GHK, were able to see Grange off by 3-2. With one game to go the result leaves GHK almost safe from relegation while Grange are facing play-offs next month.

A legacy of the long cold winter is that we’ve had is a backlog of hockey fixtures. For that reason Hillhead men had to play three games over four days between the 19th to 22nd April, the penultimate weekend of the league season. I got to two of the games.
First up was Edinburgh University on Thursday night under the floodlights at Old Anniesland. Two down at half time Hillhead fought back to 2-2. On Saturday they were two down to the on form Clydesdale team in not much more than two minutes and this time a comeback was beyond them. Clydesdale went on to win by 6-2 and secure fifth place in the division. Hillhead are eighth and in danger of facing relegation play-offs.

The Polish under 18 boys and girls played three game series against Scotland on 12-14th April.
I made it to the thursday night boys game at Titwood. On yet another cold night Scotland took a one goal lead in the first half. They couldn’t hold on after the break though as the visitors came back to win 2-1.

The under 16 and under 18 boys and girls teams from Wales came to Glasgow over Easter weekend and played three game series against Scotland.
Scotland came out on top in all four series but their were some great games. Notable was the first under 18 boys game where a last minute Welsh goal levelled the score at 4-4.
I caught some of the action at Titwood on the Friday night and Glasgow Green on Saturday and Sunday.

In Women’s division 1 on Sunday 25th Hillhead played hosts to Dundee Wanderers at Glasgow Green.
The home side had a strong half and had the bulk of play. However they couldn’t take any of their chances and were a goal down at half time. Wanderers took control of the game in the second half and finished with a 3-0 win.

Kelburne had a big two game weekend over 24/25th March at Glasgow Green as they played both their closest challengers in their pursuit of yet another league championship.
Second place Grange were the Saturday visitors. The game started badly for them as they were two down inside five minutes and then a spectacular third soon afterwards (photo below). It was too much to fight back from and the final result was 5-3 to Kelburne.
On Sunday Grove Menzieshill fared better. Kelburne scored three times but their rivals found an equaliser every time. 3-3 was how it finished.
These results leave Kelburne with a 5 point lead at the top of Division 1 with only three games left to play.
