After a run of four defeats against the top two teams in the Premier North Division the Pirates got back to winning ways in their last home fixture of the season on 30th July at Hamilton Rugby Club. It wasn’t easy though as, after EK had led almost all game the Wolverines fought back to take a four point advantage at the beginning of the fourth quarter. A final burst by the Pirates, taking advantage of Lancashire mistakes, saw them safely through however by a final score of 32-16.

Both the junior and Senior Pirates teams made the trip to Skelmersdale on 23rd July to play matches against Merseyside Nighthawks.

The under 19s were first to play. They had two goals. One was simply to keep their winning streak going, the other was to concede as few points as possible so they would have home advantage for their coming play-off meeting with Nottingham Caesars. They succeeded in both, taking the game with a comfortable scoreline of 56-6.

The senior Pirates faced a much bigger task. Merseyside hold second place in the division again and needed the win to confirm their play-off berth.
East Kilbride conceded two touchdowns early in the game, but at half time they were still in it at 26-13 down. They couldn’t keep up this momentum in the second half though as the Nighthawks kept the pressure on and went on to win by 59-13.

Chasing the second play-off place from BAFA Division 2 North, the Roughnecks were visitors to Wishaw to play Clyde Valley on July 16th.
This was exactly the type of close, hard fought game that has been typical of this division in 2017. Exactly, because the result was a 13-13 tie.

These teams will meet again in Aberdeen before the final league positions are settled.

The senior East Kilbride team is still struggling to keep up in the Premier North division. The unbeaten leaders Tamworth Phoenix, who were the visitors on 9th July, quickly showed the gap that’s developed between the teams by scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter. Things didn’t improve a lot for the Pirates during the rest of the game and the scoreline stretched to 59-7 by the end.

While Tamworth appear to be cruising to the division title again the chances of play-off football for the Pirates are now almost none.

The junior Pirates continued their winning streak with a comfortable 36-0 win on 9th July at Hamilton. The clean sheet was vital in their chase for a home play-off game and it needed an outstanding defensive stand late in the game when Leeds had a first and goal opportunity.

BAFA’s Division 2 North (actually North Division 2 North) features only four teams, who are having to play each other three times. Glasgow Tigers travelled to the Clyde Valley Blackhawks at Wishaw on 2nd July for the second time in a fortnight and with two wins against their local rivals already in the bank.

This was a close game which remained scoreless until the final play of the third quarter when the Tigers forced a touchdown on a short yardage run. This lead was short lived as Clyde Valley hit back almost immediately to level the scores. A field goal with less than a minute left on the clock was the decider and it was Glasgow who clinched it. The final score was 10-7.

The Tigers now have a 5-1 record and comfortably lead the division.

There are four under 17 teams competing in the Scottish division of the BAFA leagues this season. The third tournament was hosted by the Buccaneers at Hamilton Rugby Club on the 1st July.

Last year’s champions (not just of Scotland but of the whole of Britain) East Kilbride Pirates won all three of there games. These results were enough to clinch top spot in the division and to qualify for the national championship tournament at Britbowl. Highland Wildcats were running up in this tournamenmt ahead of Edinburgh Wolves who beat the hosts in the final game.

There was a double header for East Kilbride Pirates at Hamilton Rugby Club on 25th June,

The under 19 team played first, continuing their rivalry against the excellent organisation from Inverness area, the Highland Wildcats. The visitors had travelled with a limited number of players and though they had some success, they scored the first points EK have conceded this year, they were well beaten in the end. The final score was Pirates 30 Wildcats 12.

The Pirates senior team faced Merseyside Nighthawks with both sides in the chase for the second play off place in the Premier North division.

It started looking like a close game. The Nighthawks scored a touchdown on their opening posession only for the Pirates to equalise on their next series. From there though it was Merseyside who took the dominant position. EK managed a second TD in the third quarter but the Nighthawks had scored eight times by the end and were comfortable winners by 45-14.

The Pirates next fixture is at Hamilton on July 9th where the junior team will play Leeds and the seniors face the Division leading Tamworth Phoenix.

The Wolves’ final home game of the season brought the winless Sheffield Giants to Meggetland on 10th June.

Edinburgh had the perfect start to the game as they scored a touchdown on their first posession. From there though it became a struggle. The Giants forced an equaliser and then took a 14-7 lead on a ‘Hail Mary’ play on the last snap of the second quarter. Neither side made much progress through the third quarter and it was late in the fourth when the Wolves got their second touchdown. They went for a two point conversion and the win rather than one to tie the game but failed. Things then went from bad to worse as Sheffield returned the ensuing kick-off for a touchdown. This gave them a 20-13 lead which they held onto for the few remaining minutes.

This was a valuable win for the Giants who must now have a good chance of at least avoiding relegation. The Wolves have three difficult away games to finish the season, but their 3-3-1 record suggests, at worst, they’ll finish the season safely in mid table.

I’ve been to see Edinburgh Wolves four times this season, every game has been a thriller with the result undecided ’til the last minute. The game at Meggetland on 3st June against their bogey team, the Merseyside Nighthawks, might just have been the most exciting yet.

The game started badly for the Wolves as they turned over the ball two times in quick succession. However they managed to stop the Nighthawks offence on the goal line on both drives and then drove down the field to take the lead. The sides spent the first half trading scores and Edinburgh led 21-20 at the break. Merseyside then built a 14 point lead after half time and the Wolves needed to mount a comeback. The defecit was reduced to 8, then another touchdown was followed by a failed 2 point attempt which would have tied the scores. Finally, inside the last two minutes, the Wolves forced a go-ahead score. Even after that it took an interception in their own end zone on the last play of the game for Edinburgh to secure the win by 41-36.
