After two wins on the road the Wolves first home game of the Premier Division season was at Meggetland on 20th May against the newly promoted Titans.

Both teams have had a good start to the season and there wasn’t much to separate them. There were lead changes as each side scored two touchdowns and the difference in the end was Manchester slotting a winning field goal. the final score was 16-14.

After the Aussie Rules footy on 19th May I went out to Yoker to see the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup semi-final.
The game went to form. After Kyles (currently third in the Premiership) took an early lead, GMA (third in the National Division) gave a good showing but couldn’t quite get on terms. The final score was 4-2 to the visitors.

Scotland’s Aussie Rules league is going well these days with half a dozen active teams.
I got along to Nethercraigs on 19th May to see the Greater Glasgow Giants take on the long established Edinburgh Bloods.
This season’s Giants aren’t quite the team which took last year’s championship and though they made the game close in the third quarter it was a happy Bloods team which went back to Edinburgh with the win by (13.15) 93 to (9.14) 68.

The last weekend of the club hockey season over the 12/13th May saw the top four men’s and women’s teams play off for the right to play in European competitions next year, and for the lower Division 1 and top Division 2 teams sort out promotion and relegation.
On the Saturday I was at Glasgow Green where Grove Menzieshill men’s 3-1 win  put an end to Kelburne’shopes of a trophy this year. After that it was the turn of Grove Menzieshill women, but they finished on the wrong side of a 3-1 result as Clydesdale Western earned their place in the Grand Final.

Back to Glasgow Green on the Sunday for four matches. First up saw a game between two Edinburgh teams playing for the last place in Women’s Division 1 next season. It was close in the end at a scoreline of 2-1 but Grange were on top for most of the game against promotion hopefuls Inverleith. The mens game that followed wasn’t so close. Uddingston dominated and condemned Dundee Wanderers to relegation by 6-1.

In the first of the Grand Finals Edinburgh University women took a first half lead against Clydesdale Western. They didn’t capitalise on their dominance however and later in the second half the Western girls managed to get back into the game, their equalising goal forcing a sudden death shoot out. It was University who won the shoot-out with a clinical performance and they had completed the League/Cup/Grand Final treble.
In the men’s Grand Final it was Grange who were chasing the same treble. It wasn’t to be however as Grove Menzieshill were on top for most of the game and it finished with yet another 3-1 scoreline.

08. May 2018 · Comments Off on East Kilbride Pirates v Edinburgh Wolves · Categories: American Football, Photo Set

Last season the two games between East Kilbride and Edinburgh were very closely fought, one tie and then a win for the Pirates with the last score of the game. Their first meeting this year was at GHA Rugby Club on 6th May and it looks like the close games are becoming a tradition.
This time East Kilbride raced into a 20 point lead with three touchdowns in the first quarter, including two interceptions returned by the defence. The Wolves scored in the second quarter to make the half time score 20-8. Another touchdown for the Pirates on their opening drive of the second half restored their advantage but Edinburgh were fighting back hard. They forced over their fouth touchdown with about two minutes left which tied the scores, then the extra point gave them a 28-27 advantage which the Pirates couldn’t overcome.
So it was that the Wolves had famously broken the Pirates unbeaten streak against all Scottish teams which stretched back almost almost 22 years. In the Premier Division the Wolves have now won their first two while the Pirates have lost theirs.

After clinching the league title the previous weekend Grange’s men did the double by winning the Scottish Cup at Glasgow Green on May 5th.
They had started as clear favourites and immediately showed why as they scored in the first twenty seconds and again a couple of minutes later. It could have been that the game was as good as over but Edinburgh University put up a good fight and made a game of it. Grange ran out comfortable winners though by 6-3.

In other games I got to, Edinburgh Uni teams won both the District and Reserve plate Finals while the Scottish Plate Final went to Gordonians with a 5-1 win over Stepps. Full reports are on the Scottish Hockey website.

Newly promoted Glasgow Tigers made their debut on Division 1 North on 29th April at Nethercraigs. They faced a daunting task as the visitors were a Yorkshire Rams team who, after one win, have already been declared as favourites to win the division.
The Rams started strongly and scored a touchdown on their first drive, They didn’t dominate however and by halftime they’d only added a safety which made the score 10-0. The second half was just as close as the first. Neither team managed to add any points and Yorkshire were pleased to hold on to win.

Saturday 28th April was the final day of the league season and both championships were up for grabs.

I started the day at Uddingston where Kelburne needed a win to secure their 14th consecutive title. Kelburne started nervously and found themselves 2-0 down at half time. A fight back followed and they fought back to take a 3-2 lead with five minutes left. The title looked to be heading their way until the last minute when Uddingston scored from a penalty corner and snatched a draw. In a reverse of last year’s events, attention switched to Edinburgh where Grange went on to win their game and take the league title.

I then made my way to Auchenhowie where Edinburgh University women also needed a win to secure the championship. Their task should have been trickier as the opposition was third placed Western Wildcats, however three goals scored in the first half let them coast to a 3-1 win.

The Wildcats v University men’s game followed in which the home team, already qualified for the play-offs with fourth place in the division, saw off the students by 4-1.
