There was a double header for East Kilbride Pirates at Hamilton Rugby Club on 25th June,

The under 19 team played first, continuing their rivalry against the excellent organisation from Inverness area, the Highland Wildcats. The visitors had travelled with a limited number of players and though they had some success, they scored the first points EK have conceded this year, they were well beaten in the end. The final score was Pirates 30 Wildcats 12.

The Pirates senior team faced Merseyside Nighthawks with both sides in the chase for the second play off place in the Premier North division.

It started looking like a close game. The Nighthawks scored a touchdown on their opening posession only for the Pirates to equalise on their next series. From there though it was Merseyside who took the dominant position. EK managed a second TD in the third quarter but the Nighthawks had scored eight times by the end and were comfortable winners by 45-14.

The Pirates next fixture is at Hamilton on July 9th where the junior team will play Leeds and the seniors face the Division leading Tamworth Phoenix.

Greater Glasgow Giants have had an unbeaten run so far this season in the AFL Scotland league. They were understregth and nervous going into their game against Edinburgh Bloods at Nethercraigs on 24th June.

With a strong wind blowing from one end to the other domination of the game switched from quarter to quarter. In the end the Giants edged it by 92 points to 85.

The under 16 boys played a three game series against their counterparts from Ulster at Glasgow Green over the weekend of 23-25th June. I made it along to the Friday night game.

The Scottish boys proved to be a much stronger team in this game. They produced a dominant performance and strolled to a 10-0 win.

The Wolves’ final home game of the season brought the winless Sheffield Giants to Meggetland on 10th June.

Edinburgh had the perfect start to the game as they scored a touchdown on their first posession. From there though it became a struggle. The Giants forced an equaliser and then took a 14-7 lead on a ‘Hail Mary’ play on the last snap of the second quarter. Neither side made much progress through the third quarter and it was late in the fourth when the Wolves got their second touchdown. They went for a two point conversion and the win rather than one to tie the game but failed. Things then went from bad to worse as Sheffield returned the ensuing kick-off for a touchdown. This gave them a 20-13 lead which they held onto for the few remaining minutes.

This was a valuable win for the Giants who must now have a good chance of at least avoiding relegation. The Wolves have three difficult away games to finish the season, but their 3-3-1 record suggests, at worst, they’ll finish the season safely in mid table.

June 3rd and 4th saw the annual Tartan Tourament softball played at Cartha Queens Park RFC. I managed to miss the bad weather on the Saturday and went along for the usual entertaining day on the Sunday.

Congratulations to the winning team, the Legends of Filth, who retained the title after beating the Hairy Coos in the repeat of last year’s final.

I’ve been to see Edinburgh Wolves four times this season, every game has been a thriller with the result undecided ’til the last minute. The game at Meggetland on 3st June against their bogey team, the Merseyside Nighthawks, might just have been the most exciting yet.

The game started badly for the Wolves as they turned over the ball two times in quick succession. However they managed to stop the Nighthawks offence on the goal line on both drives and then drove down the field to take the lead. The sides spent the first half trading scores and Edinburgh led 21-20 at the break. Merseyside then built a 14 point lead after half time and the Wolves needed to mount a comeback. The defecit was reduced to 8, then another touchdown was followed by a failed 2 point attempt which would have tied the scores. Finally, inside the last two minutes, the Wolves forced a go-ahead score. Even after that it took an interception in their own end zone on the last play of the game for Edinburgh to secure the win by 41-36.
