Glasgow Tigers first home game of the BAFA season had Dumfries Hunters as the visitors to Lochinch on 23rd April. The Hunters are a new team to the league and were playing their first competitive game.
After a slow first quarter Dumfries opened the scoring with a breakaway touchdown in the second. The Tigers responded with one of their own and led by 7-6 at half time. The home team built a 17-6 lead during the second half but a further score by the Hunters brought them to only three poins behind and left us with a tense finish.

On the final Saturday of the Scottish League the men’s champions was to be decided in Edinburgh. Grange started in pole position. They had a one point lead and a win over Western Wildcats at Fettes would confirm them as champions. It was going well for them when they took a two goal lead in the second half. Then at all went wrong. The Wildcats came back with a three goal burst, securing their own top four finish and leaving the title race open.

Grange’s defeat left the door open for Kelburne to steal the title by beating Edinburgh University across the city at Peffermill. A goal in each half proved enough and it was Kelburne who finished the day celebrating, their 13th consecutive title.

It’s Easter weekend and I’ve had my first chance of the year to get along to Yoker for some shinty. The game on 15th April was a Celtic Society Cup quarter Final tie between Glasgow Mid Argyll and Glenorchy.

Mid Argyll, with their Premier Division experience, proved too strong for their Division One opponents and eased to a win by 8-0.

Opening day of the American Football National Leagues brought us a new local derby as Edinburgh Wolves, newly promoted to the Premier Division, visited East Kilbride Pirates at Hamilton Rugby Club on 9th April.

The Wolves made a strong start, scoring a touchdown on their opening posession. East Kilbride kept pace with them however and by half time they led by 14-12. Both teams had two touchdowns but Edinburgh had missed their extra points.

Edinburgh continued to set the place in the second half and built a two touchdown lead. It took a last gasp effort from the Pirates to pull back the two scores in the last five minutes. In this half it was East Kilbride who missed both extra point attempts and that meant the game finished as a 26-26 tie.

Top four finishes and a place in the Division One play-offs were on the minds of both Western Wildcats teams at Auchenhowie on 1st April.
The men’s team were first up and produced a strong performance to defeat Uddingston 3-0. The win leap-frogged them above Uddy into the coveted fourth place in the league with two games left to play.
The Wildcats womens team, who have already secured their fourth place, hosted the team ahead of them, Clydesdale Western, in the following game. This was a tight game with both teams seeming to play below their best. The visitors won, scoring the game’s only goal just after half time.
