While the men’s semi-finals were being played on the main pitch at Peffermill on 26th February a top of the Women’s DIvision 1 clash was relegated to the back pitch. A tight game saw Edinburgh University put an end to the Western girls unbeaten record with a 1-0 win which puts them into first place in the division. Western are down to third, four points behind but with two games in hand.

The semi-finals of the two senior competitions were played at Peffermill on 26th February.

In the Plate two Division 1 teams won over lower division opposition. Western Wildcats quickly built a lead over Perthshire and eased to an 7-1 win. It took Watsonians much longer to break down Greenock Morton but a late goal flurry saw them through as 5-1 winners.

The favourites for the cup, Kelburne, were made to struggle by Edinburgh University who had taken an early lead and then scored in the last second to finish the game at 2-2. It was Kelburne who triumphed in the shoot-out that followed. The expected close game between Grange and Grove Menzieshill didn’t materialise as Grange scored early and often and sauntered to an 8-1 win.

Glasgow’s new men’s team had their debut event on 19th February at Blackburn Community Centre. It was a successful debut too as they defeated the visiting Barrow Infernos. It was good fun entertainment for all the family.

The annual indoor tournament for under 18 teams representing Scottish Hockey’s district was played at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth on 11th February. In a repeat of last year, Midland District came out on top in both the boys and girls tournaments.

For the Midland boys the win was straightforward, three games played, three wins, 35 goals scored, only 10 conceded. East took the runners up spot after edging their game against West.

The win wasn’t so clear cut for the Midland girls. They played out a 3-3 draw in their game with West and, as both won their other three games, the decision came down to goal difference.

The University of Glasgow’s Tigers haven’t had it all their own way in BUCS Division 1 North this year, having compiled a 3 wins, 2 losses record. I made it to Garscube for their final home fixture of the year on 5th February where they showed a bit of form.

The visitors were the University of Sunderland Spartans who weren’t to add to the one win they’ve taken all year. The result of this one was 26-0 to Glasgow, though to be fair the game was closer than that scoreline suggests.

The Tigers still trail Hull by one win at the top of the division but with two games to go they’re well in the hunt for a play-off place.

The Men’s Championship went to Grove Menzieshill after a 7-3 win over Inverleith while Dundee Wanderers beat Grove 4-2 to take the Women’s title again. Other Dundee successes saw Wanderers men take the second division title while Grove Menzieshill 3s took the regional crown.

Among the other games Edinburgh University men and Hillhead women earned promotion to Division one for next year. Kelburne men and Clydesdale Western women were the third place finishers in their respective championships.
