Clyde Valley Blackhawks v Dunfermline Kings
Teams wishing to join the British American Football leagues are given associate status and have to play games to demonstrate that they can organise and play matches. Clyde Valley Blackhawks dropped out of the league system before the start of last season and now have accociate status, as do the newly formed Dunfermline Kings. The two played a demonstration game at Beltane fields, Wishaw, on 23rd October.

The event appeared very well organised by the Blackhawks with a very well marked out field etc. The game was ratger one sided with the experience of the home team giving them the advantage. The final score was Blackhawks 37 Kings 0.

I covered four Division 1 hockey games over the 22/23 October weekend.

Starting on Saturday, Kelburne men saw off Gordonians with a comfortable 6-1 victory. The win kept Kelburne on top of the table, at least until the next day, while Gordonians remain winless.

In the next game Kelburne women also had a comfortable win, 5-0 over CALA Edinburgh. Kelburne sit comfortably mid-table, CALA are winless.

Clydesdale Western v Edinburgh University
The Western girls kept up their 100% start to the league season with a win over last year’s top team, Edinburgh University, at Titwood on 15th October.

Despite there being only one goal, Western scored from a penalty corner early in the second half, this was a highly entertaining game. Both teams will no doubt be challenging for trophies by the end of the season.

Taking advantage of the good weather I made it to four games over the 8/9th October weekend.

Firstly I was at Old Anniesland on Saturday to watch Hillhead and Western Wildcats men chasing their first points of the season. Both succeeded in getting off the mark, this was a great game in which Hillhead fought back for a 3-3 draw.

Saturday’s second game was at Titwood where the early form team of Women’s Division 1, Clydesdale Western, faced Dundee Wanderers. The visitors had only eleven players but somehow the succeeded in building a two goal lead in the first half. They couldn’t hold on though and eventually went down 3-2.

Both Western Wildcats first teams had home Scottish Cup ties on Sunday. The men played first, against fellow Division 1 team Grange. The visitors from Edinburgh have been a strong Cup team in recent years. They kept up that form and left with a 2-0 win.

The Wildcats women had an easier task as they’d drawn Aberdeen University of the Championship League. Two early goals made sure this would always be a comfortable win for the home team but the student team made them fight all of the way. The final score was 6-0.

under 18s - West v EastMidWestThere was a double triumph for West District hockey as they added to the one boy’s title of last weekend by taking both girl’s competitions this week.

The under 18s had eight teams competing. The surprise result came in the semi-final when SouthWest beat Midland. Go SW (did I mention I first played hockey in Stranraer, many years ago).  They went on to play well in the final but couldn’t stop West who won 2-0. Third place went to East who beat Midland in a shoot-out.

Six districts competed in the under 16s in a round robin competition. West’s win came at the last minute of the last game against Midland as they defended a series of penalty corners to hold on for a 1-1 draw and the one point they needed. East finished second on the ladder ahead of Midland.
