 Hockey for Heroes

The guys from Hockey for Heroes visited Glasgow as part of their tour of the country in support of Help for Heroes which raise money to help our injured and fallen Heroes and run a series of recovery centres across the country. The Hockey for Heroes team comprises a number of Military and Ex-Military personnel. The tour involves them climbing the three peaks, Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Mount Snowdon, between playing 33 games of hockey, all in 10 days.

They arrived in Glasgow on 22nd June having come straight from climbing Scafell Pike, and played games against Inverleith, Keburne and Hillhead. Unfortunately the winter conditions on top of Ben Nevis the following morning made it unsafe to climb Ben Nevis without full mountaineering gear so the team had a bit of rest before playing Uddingston, Clydesdale and Grange in the afternoon.

The Brazilian senior men’s team have been spending time is Scotland as they prepare for the Pan-American qualifying tournament for their home Olympic Games next year. They played the first of two fixtures against the Scotland Under 21 team at Glasgow Green on 19th May.

With some of the first choice under 21 players having been playing in Spain with the senior squad last week the Scotland team was supplemented with a number of under 18s, but they still gave a good account of themselves. Nevertheless, Brazil were too strong for them on the night and came through to win 3-0.

Clyde Valley Blackhawks v Edinburgh Wolves
Scotland’s two teams in BAFANL Division 1 had their first meeting of the season at Wishaw on 17th May.

Clyde Valley went into the game with a perfect 3 wins no losses record while Edinburgh had 2 wins and 1 loss. Mind you, that loss was against the hot favourites to win the division, Merseyside Nighthawks, so there wasn’t much between them in the form guide.

In the event Edinburgh were on top through most of the game. They scored first, held an 18-12 lead at half time and saw the game out to a final 26-12 win.
So both now have 3-1 records and it’s all to play for.

Pirates v Panthers16th May was a big day for East Kilbride Pirates as they hosted visitors from the USA. The Panthers of Hanover College, Indiana, were the visitors as part of their tour of Ireland and Scotland organised by Global Football.

This was always going to be a test to see how the Pirates, and American Football in the UK in general, would rate against a Division 3 American College team with their advantage of players who grew up with the game and regular training. In the end the visitors won comfortably, by 51-0, but everyone enjoyed the experience and learned a lot.

Let’s hope we can all do it again sometime soon.

Saturday 9th May saw Coventry make the long trip from the English Midlands to face the Pirates at Hamilton Rugby Club.

Coventry looked to be suffering the effects of the journey as the Pirates scored a touchdown quickly on their opening drive. The Jets rallied though and held the rest of the first quarter scoreless. The second quarter belonged to the Pirates as two more touchdowns and a field goal brought the score to 24-0 at halftime.

The Pirates scoring in the second half consisted of a touchdown by the defence and another two field goals before Coventry were able to get a score of their own in the last minute. The final score was 37-6 to East Kilbride who now have a 2 and 1 record in the Premier Division North.East Kilbride Pirates v Coventry Jets

The final games of the club season were played at Glasgow Green over the 2nd and 3rd of May as the Championships and final relegation places were decided over two legged ties.

In the Saturday game in the Women’s Championship Grove Menzieshill upset Edinburgh University by winning 2-0. In the second leg on Sunday Edinburgh fought back with two goals to level the tie on aggregate by halftime. There were no goals in the second half and it was the Edinburgh team who came through to clinch the title after a shoot-out. Well deserved too after their perfect league season.

The first game of the Men’s Championship between Kelburne and Grange was played in atrocious weather and finished a scoreless draw. The second leg was still scoreless at half time before a stunning second half in which Kelburne took the lead twice only to have Grange equalise. Another shoot-out followed and this time it was Grange who came out on top, reversing last year’s result and winning the Scottish place in next year’s Eurorleague.

In the Men’s relegation match survival in Division 1 went to Dundee Wanderers who beat Inverleith by 2-1 and 3-2. The Inverleith club also lost out in the Women’s relegation match. They’d tied their first game against Kelburne 1-1 with a last gasp equaliser but couldn’t keep up in the second leg which they lost 4-0.
