The Pirates first home league fixture of the season came a week after they had played Lancashire Wolverines away and suffered their first regular season loss for a couple of years.

They came out in a determined mood to stop the rot and began to overwhelm the Rams immediately, running in three touchdowns in the opening minutes. They scored another on the opening play of the second quarter before losing their only score of the day, a 2 point safety on an attempted punt return. The second half followed the pattern of the first as the Pirates kept up their momentum and finished 63-2 winners.

Next up for the Pirates will be the Coventry Jets who come visiting in two weeks time and will pose a much harder test .

Before the senior game the Pirates Junior team played a match against the Highland Wildcats. This game went the way of the experienced visitors who demonstrated their power and ran out 52-0 winners. The junior pirates have hopefully learned lessons from this as they will face Edinburgh Wolves as a warm-up to the Coventry game.

Western Wildcats v Edinburgh UniversityThe top four teams in the Men’s and Women’s First Division are playing elimination matches, aggregate scores from home and away games, to qualify for a place in European competition next season. Both Wildcats teams made it to the top four and played games at Auchenhowie on 25th April.

The men, who finished third in the league, played second place finishers, Grange. This was a really close game, only decided when Grange scored from a penalty corner at the final whistle to clinch a 2-1 scoreline.

Wildcats women faced Edinburgh University, who have a 100% record in the league this season. This game went to form, finishing 5-0 to the visitors, but the score exaggerates the difference between the two teams.

Glasgow Rocks action
I had my first experience of shooting a Basketball match on 24 April when I went to Glasgow’s Emirates Arena for SPN to cover the BBL play-off game between Glasgow Rocks and Cheshire Phoenix.
It was the visitors who came out on top of this first leg game by 91-78. They have since gone on to win the tie on aggregate over the two legs and continue to the semi-final stage at the play-off weekend.

This year’s Scottish Hockey Finals day was 18th April at Glasgow Green.

Dundee Wanderers

The Women’s Plate Final was the first game. Edinburgh University’s third team had a great run to get to the final but they were outclassed on the day by Division One’s Dundee Wanderers who eased to a 9-1 victory

The Men’s Plate Final was a closer game but still a bit of a mismatch as Clydesdale overcame Second Division Falkirk GHG, running up the score towards the end of the game to finish at 7-1.

The Women’s Cup Final was easily the game of the day, featuring the regular opponents Grove Menzieshill and Clydesdale Western. It was Grove who opened the scoring early in the game but Western came back two goals to take a lead. Grove then equalised but Western snatched another goal before half time to lead at 3-2. A fourth goal for Western in the second half saw them take a lead they wouldn’t lose as Grove could only pull one back and the game finished at 4-3.

Grange were favourites to repeat their win of last year in the Men’s Cup Final against Edinburgh University. The first half was closely fought and saw Grange score the only goal. They took control in the second half though, stretching to a 5 goal lead before Uni scored a consolation goal shortly before the final klaxon.

Clyde Valley Blackhawks v Chester RomansIt’s been week 2 of the National Leagues and both these teams were playing their first fixture in Division 1 North. This season there are three levels in the League, the Premier Division (which features East Kilbride Pirates), Division 1 (Clyde Valley and Edinburgh) and Division 2 (all the other Scottish teams).

The game saw the Blackhawks get off to a fast start, it only took the opening kick-off return and one running play for them to chalk up their first touchdown. They kept the pressure on and dominated the game throughout, running in six touchdowns in total and managing to hold onto a clean sheet on the couple of occasions Chester threatened their goal line.

The final score was 41-0 to Clyde Valley.

11 April 2015, Hamilton Rugby Club. East Kilbride Pirates v Belfast TrojansThe Pirates played their first fixture of the year at Hamilton Rugby Club on 11th April, the visiting team being reigning Irish champions, Belfast Trojans. This was a pre-season friendly game for the Pirates while the Trojans are already two games, and two wins, into their season.

After a hard fought, scoreless first quarter it was the Pirates who opened the scoring in the second as Jamie McLaughlin took a pass (at the second attempt) and ran to the endzone. The Trojans fought back after half time and brought the score to 7-6 after a touchdown of their own. The Pirates scored a field goal and then a second touchdown to lead 17-6 but Belfast again fought back, another touchdown bringing them to only 3 points behind. The game was close and it took another touchdown by Jamie McLaughlin to secure the win for the Pirates at 24-14.

It was great to see the Irish team visiting. Even though the Pirates were trying out some rookie players during the game the visitors proved they were worthy opponents and that they could easily compete on this side of the North Channel.

There was a feast of hockey on display at Glasgow Green during the period 7 to 10th April as under 18 teams representing Scotland, Wales and Ireland played a series of matches.

The Scottish and Welsh boys played three games. Scotland won the first game by 4-0, then Wales produced a great fighting performance to snatch the second by 3-2. Scotland were back on top in the third game and won it comfortably by 7-1.

Hawks v County
I headed to Old Anniesland on 4th April on behalf of SPN for the last game of the BT Premiership season, the previously postponed Glasgow Hawks v Stirling County. This was a crucial game for both clubs, Stirling were 3rd from bottom of the table before the game, Hawks second from bottom. The points on offer were vital, the winner would secure their place in the Premiership next season, the losers face a promotion/relegation play-off game against GHA.

Hawks scored the opening try but two penalties for Stirling saw them hold a 6-5 half time lead. A second try for Hawks put them back in the lead but that was immediately matched by Stirling. Hawks took the lead for the final time with a penalty and then a third try and held on at the end to win by 22-16.

The final-four games of all of these competitions were played at Glasgow Green on 29th March.

csf_Gro_EUniThe first games in the morning were the in Women’s Plate. On the back pitch Dundee Wanderers started off slowly against Grange EL. Eventually they forced a goal which gave them a 1-0 half time lead. In the second half the Dundee girls managed to find their form and they came on to record a 5-0 win. Meantime, on the front pitch, Edinburgh University B (that’s their 3rd team!) were making short work of Stirling Wanderers and they too eased to a 5-0 win.

The women’s Scottish Cup games were next up. On the back pitch Clydesdale Western recorded the third 5-0 of the day as they easily saw off Erskine Stewart’s Melville. The game on the main pitch would have made a great final as unbeaten Edinburgh University faced up to Grove Menzieshill. Uni were one goal up early on but by the second half they had to fight back to equalise at 2-2. The winning goal came five minutes from the end and it was the Grove girls who scored and had to hang on to the whistle.

The first men’s game on the front pitch was another thriller. Aberdeen Grammar pulled back a 3-0 half time defecit to level at 3-3 in the second half before Falkirk GHG found a late winner and progress to the Plate Final. They will meet Clydesdale Western in that game. They had a comfortable 6-1 win over Granite City Wanderers.

The final games of the day were the Men’s Cup semi-finals. Second Division champions Grove Menzieshill looked like they might cause a shock when they took the lead early against the Cup holders, Grange. However this wasn’t to be as the Edinburgh side stepped up a gear through some atrocious weather and finished with a 4-1 win. Edinburgh University men made it two wins out of three for the students on the day as they secured their place in the final with a 1-0 win over Gordonians.
