There was a change of scene for me on Sunday 22nd February when I was at Callendar Park in Falkirk for the Scottish Cross Country Championships. I was shooting for an aspiring new agency called SPN.

The weather on the day was dreadful, freezing rain and sleet all driven by a strong wind. It I thought it was bad imagine how the runners felt. Anyway, it’s a great event, running at that venue for the 10th consecutive year, and well worth a visit next year.

Edinburgh University are the dominant team so far in the Scottish Women’s League Division 1  this season and have a perfect record to date. On a cold 21st February they were the visitors to Western Wildcats, themselves having a fine season and holding 4th place in the division.

The game started with a very quick goal to the Uni girls, followed by a second a few minutes later. It looked like being another runaway win. The Wildcats aren’t pushovers this season and, though they were often under pressure, it was late in the second half before Edinburgh scored their third and final goal and secured their 3-0 win.

Since the University of Stirling Clansmen became British University Champions last year they have been a bit of a target. The pressure has increased since the new elite-level Premier League was formed and a slow start to the season means they find themselves with two losses so far. Their form has returned though and the Derby Braves were comfortably dealt with on Sunday 15th.

In fact it took only two plays for the Clansmen to run in their first touchdown while Derby could make little progress as their defensive line were unable to provide their quarterback with any meaningful protection. The final score was 46-3 to Stirling.

The game next Sunday at Stirling is now more or less a decider for the last play-off place as Loughborough are the visitors.

A couple of years ago I covered the first ever women’s Aussie Rules game in Scotland. So, when the opportunity appeared I was delighted to go along to a foggy Queensferry Rugby Club on Saturday 14th to cover the first ever women’s American Football in Scotland. The three teams featured, Edinburgh Wolves, Teeside Steelers and Leeds Beckett played the 5 on 5 format game as part of the BAFA Sapphire Series.

On the day the girls played their first ever matches with a lot of commitment and were generally great. The Leeds team won both their games and Teeside scraped the victory in the other.
