Clyde Valley Blackhawks have been the dominant team in the BAFANL National League North this season and came to the fixture at Lochinch on 29 June with a 6-0 record.

The first half was a slow affair with neither offence able to put together a drive until late in the second when the Blackhawks scored the opening touchdown on a long pass play. There were three more touchdowns for the Blackhawks in the second half, including one for the defence and one for special teams, and they finished winners by 27-0. The Tigers now have a 3-3 record.

In the run up to the Commonwealth Games, Rugby League held their championship as an under 19 nine a side tournament between eight nations at Broadwood Stadium on 27/28 June.

The Friday saw the teams divided into two pools. In Pool A Australia came out on top ahead of Wales Scotland and Jamaica. The highlight was a thrilling 18-18 draw between Scotland and Australia.
Pool B started with a big surprise as a novice Canada team thrashed England 24-4. Papua New Guinea finished top of the group with a perfect record , ahead of Canada, England and South Africa.

The bottom four teams from Friday played off for the 5th to 8th places on Saturday. Scotland beat England by 14-8 in the 5th place games while Jamaica finished 7th after beating South Africa. Following semi-final defeats for both teams the Bronze medal match went to Wales over a tiring Canada side.
In the final the Papua New Guinea side were rampant in the first half, running in three quick tries before the Australians could respond. This was enough to secure the gold medals for PNG as they ran out win by 22-8.

The Commonwealth Games are now less than a month away and Scotland women are continuing their preparation with a series of games against Spain.

The first game on 26 June was a thrilling end to end contest. Scotland led twice during the first half but  were pegged back to 2-2 at half time. There was still little to separate the teams in the second half, but it was the Spanish who forced the only goal of the half and took the win 3-2.

With two wins already under their belt and another fixture conceded the Pirates had their first home fixture of the season at Hamilton Rugby Club on 8th June.

This was a scrappy game played in constantly changing weather. The Pirates were on top in the first half, but couldn’t extend the lead beyond 14-0. The Wolverines were providing stiff opposition and, while they conceded another three touchdowns in the second half, they managed to score the first points of the season against the Pirates defence. The final score 38-6 to East Kilbride.

The Pirates next fixture is against Nottingham Panthers on Saturday 21st, with a 4pm kick-off. It will be preceded by the Pirates junior team playing the Highland Wildcats at noon.

I was delighted to take up an invitation to cover this annual softball tournament at Lochinch over the weekend. Nine teams competed over the two full days, one day sunshine, one day rain, and the event finished with a nailbiting final which went to a second extra innings before the Hairy Coos edged past the Souls to take the victory.

This was a great fun weekend. It’s a great mixed sport and well worth anyone trying. Click here for more info.
