The final day of the club hockey season was played at Glasgow Green on 24 May.

The day opened with the Women’s Plate Final. The Edinburgh University second team proved to be too strong for Granite City Wanderers, their 3-0 lead at half time being enough to see them to the end. Wanderers contested the Men’s Plate too, but fared no better. Uddingston finally got some consolation after missing out on promotion by dominating the game, finally winning 7-1.

The Womens Cup finalists were the Edinburgh University first team and Clydesdale Western. Both teams were understrength as they had numerous players away in the Scotland squad and it was the students who proved to have the stronger team. They won 4-1 to complete a rare plate/cup double.

The Men’s Final, an Edinburgh derby between Inverleith and Grange, was the match of the day. Inverleith had a great first half, led 2-0 and were apparently cruising to victory. Things turned round after the interval as Grange scored early, and then equalised and finally won the shoot-out decider.

My first chance to see a bit of shinty this year on May 17th, and the Celtic Society Cup has already reached the semi-final stage.

Neither team has set the heather on fire in the league so far this season, but the Premier Division side Kyles proved to be the stronger team and ran out a comfortable 3-0 winners. They will now face Inveraray in the final at Old Anniesland on 28th June

Glasgow Tigers v Aberdeen Roughnecks
Had the chance for the first time to see the new team in American Football – Aberdeen Roughnecks – in action on 11 May at their league game at Glasgow Tigers.
The game became a bit of a mudbath as rain fell on an already soft pitch. Aberdeen played well but couldn’t match the execution of the more experienced Glasgow team, and didn’t manage to greatly threaten the Tigers line. The final score was a 38-0 win for the Tigers.
