This was the first major international tournament to be played at the National Hockey Centre at Glasgow Green, running from 27 April until 4th May. Along with Scotland Women the teams competing were South Korea, India, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland and the USA.

Final day – Sunday
The Irish team had produced heroics to beat higher rated teams on their way to the final and when they opened the scoring against USA after 3 minutes their excellent travelling support must have fancied their chances. It wasn’t to be however as the Americans managed a couple of goals before half time and another before the end to finish with a 3-1 win and the prize of a place in the Champions Trophy in 2016.

Earlier in the day South Africa secured third place with a 1-0 win in an exciting game against Spain. Korea won the 5th/6th game against Belgium in a shoot-out after the game finished 1-1.

Day 5 – Saturday

The first semi-final was played between South Africa and Ireland. The Irish fought their way to a 2-1 lead in the second half and managed to hold on to the end, not least thanks to a shot  that hit the crossbar and a weak penalty flick that was saved.
The USA produced a blistering first half in the second semi final and led by 3-0 at the interval. The Spanish rallied in the second half but only managed to pull one goal back.

After the pool stages the tournament had all-or-nothing quarter finals, with the winners contesting the top 4 places and the losers left to play for 5th to 8th.

The first game brought the biggest shock as pool A winners Korea found themselves a goal down to Ireland early. When Korea equalised in the second half it seemed they would go on to win, but it was the Irish who forced the winner, leaving the Koreans facing the bottom 4.
Belgium were favourites to win the second game but they were held to a 1-1 draw by Spain who had been improving as the tournament went on. The Spanish took the win on the strength of a 3-2 win in the running penalties shoot-out.

Day 4 – Tuesday
The day started with the tournament final between Belgium and Argentina. The Belgians started strongly and were two goals up before Argentina managed to get one back on the stroke of half time. Argentina managed an equaliser early in the second half and, despite chances at either end, there was no more scoring. The tournament was decided on a running penalties shoot-out which turned out to be disappointing as Argentina failed to score on any of their attempts, leaving Belgium to win easily.
In the second game of the day England had an easy 5-2 win over a weakened Scotland line up.

The first game on Saturday was the one which attracted a big crowd – Scotland v England. The first goal of the game went to England, who then missed the chance of a second from a penalty flick. Scotland scored an equaliser before half time but couldn’t keep the pace up in the second half and the game finished as a 3-1 win to England.

Belgium find themselves with the only 100% record after a second half goal secured a 2-1 win over Argentina. This came after the game was interrupted as the stand was evacuated because of a fire alarm (blame the English apparently).

With less than a week to go until they play in the Champions Challenge I in Glasgow, Scotland Women played the last of a three game series against Wales on 21 April.

After winning the earlier games 10-1 and 7-1 Scotland rested many of the senior players and gave some of the under 21s a chance. Wales were holding them to 1-1 at half time before running out of steam in the second half. The final score was 6-2 to Scotland.

The Pirates started there campaign to retain the Premiership North title with a trip to newly promoted Gateshead on 20th April.

Gateshead had started their season with a 67-0 win over Doncaster the previous weekend, but this wasn’t to be the start of the run of success. As they often do, the Pirates started in top gear, scoring 22 points from three touchdowns in the first quarter. After a quieter second quarter the score was 29-0, and it reached 72-0 by the end of the game.

Next up on the Pirates schedule is a trip to Doncaster Mustangs next week.

The Scottish and Irish boys and girls played a series of three games each over the Easter weekend at DISC and I made it along for the Saturday games.

The boys played out a thrilling game which saw the Scots make a late comeback from two goals down to finish at 4-4.

The Scottish girls started with an early goal, though the Irish equalised quickly. The game was close throughout and it wasn’t until the last three minutes that the deadlock was broken, Scotland getting the decisive goal and a 2-1 win.

The first games of the senior American Football league season were played on 13th April.

The first game in Division 1 North was between Glasgow Tigers and Edinburgh Wolves at Lochinch. Neither team impressed, obviously suffering from a lack of match practice and the miserable weather. The win from the only score of the game went to Edinburgh by 6-0.

It was a different story later in the day at Wishaw as the Clyde Valley Blackhawks made an immediate claim to be the leading prospects of the division as they comprehensively best West Coast Trojans 47-0. The sun even came out for the second half!

The climax of the playoff weekends were the Grand Finals at Glasgow Green on 30th March which would see the 2013/2014 champions crowned.

In the Women’s final, Grove Menzieshill, unbeaten in the league all season, started well and took an early two goal lead against Clydesdale Western. A Western fightback soon came though and by halftime the score was back to 2-2. Grove scored the first goal of the second half, but they couldn’t hold their lead for more than a minute as Western quickly equalised then found the winner. Final score: 4-3 to Clydesdale Western.

When Grange scored in the second half of the men’s final with Kelburne, bringing the score to 1-1, it looked like there could be a running penalty shoot-out and the chance of yet another favourite beaten. However Kelburne had one more goal in them and then held on to secure their 10th consecutive championship.
