The Scottish Division of the British Universities American Football League is often dismissed as weak by people from south of the border as Stirling Clansmen win all of their games easily. Stirling played their British Championship sem-final on 23rd March, and for the third consecutive week they hammered a visiting English team.

This time the opposition was from London’s Imperial University and the scoreline was 48-0. Stirling will now meet Birmingham Lions in the Final in Leeds on 29th March.

Just to prove that the Scottish Division isn’t otherwise useless, well done to Glasgow Uni Tigers who made it as far as the semi-final in the Trophy competition.

Scottish Hockey held their finals on a wet and windy Friday night at Glasgow Green on 21st March.

In the Boys S3 category there were wins for Lorretto over Douglas Academy in the Cup and George Watson’s over Stewart’s Melville in the Plate. The Boys Open plate was won by Strathallan who beat Edinburgh Academy.

Despite the weather, the last two games were thrillers. The Girls Open Cup was finally won by George Watson’s in a running penalty competition after they drew 2-2 in normal time with Mary Erskine School. A second half comeback in the Boys Cup which seemed against the odds saw Stewart’s Melville beat the Bellahouston/Glasgow School of Sport team 2-1.

After their win over Sheffield Hallam University, the Sabres of Sheffield University were the opposition for the University of Stirling Clansmen in the BUAFL quarter-final on 17 March.

This game followed the pattern of the previous week, with Stirling scoring early and regularly. The only difference was that late in the game Sheffield managed to put a drive together and scored a touchdown. The final score was 48-7 to Stirling.

The next target for the Clansmen is to surpass last years performance by winning their semi-final.

Stirling Clansmen faced there their non-Scottish opposition of the year as the play-offs began with the visit of Sheffield Hallam Warriors.

As they’ve done throughout the season, the Clansmen were quick to take control of the game. They scored a  touchdown on a reception return on Sheffield’s first possession, then kept the pace up throughout the game. The score was 24-0 at half time and 38-0 by the end .

Next weekend is the quarter-final round of the play-offs, and the Clansmen will host the team from the other Sheffield University.

Kelburne v Grove MenzieshillI had meant to have a weekend away from hockey, but it rained all week and the shinty I had planned to see was off due to a waterlogged pitch. The rain stopped finally so on Saturday afternoon I found myself back down at the National Hockey Centre to take in the Division 1 game between Kelburne and Menzieshill. The game finished as a 4-1 win to Kelburne and ended Menzieshill’s chances of making the top 4 play-offs.

After results elsewhere during the day the top 4 are settled as Kelburne, Western Wildcats, Hillhead and Grove. The remaining Division 1 teams will play in a promotion/relegation play-off with the top two from Division 2. This starts in two weeks time.

After last season’s last minute loss in the promotion play-off Uddingston have been tearing up the Second Division this season, and I got took the chance to see both their games at the weekend.

On Saturday they played Stepps at Millerston and, after conceding a first minute goal, showed the goalscoring form they’ve been known for all season and won by 11-2. Sunday’s game was against Falkirk GHG at Auchenhowie. The cold, wet and generally miserable conditions slowed the game down, but Uddingston secured the win they needed by 3-0.

Two home wins in Men’s Division One for Wildcats over the weekend has pulled them into second place in the league and assured them a vital top four place for the end of season play-offs.

On Saturday 1st March they met Inverleith and came through in the second half to win 4-2. Grange were the opposition on Sunday, also aiming for a top finish and a play-off place. Wildcats came through again in this one, finishing 5-2.
