The semi-final stage of the Premiership play-offs saw a repeat of last years fixture at the same stage, as the Pirates hosted London Blitz at Hamilton RFC on 22nd September.

The Pirates started strongly and capped off a strong opening drive with a Ryan Hunter touchdown, and then the defence held the Blitz to a three and out on their first possession. The champions from London weren’t to be beaten easily though, and a close game developed. By half time the Blitz had scored a field goal and a touchdown, and led by 10 points to 6.

There was no further scoring in the third quarter, then in the fourth the Pirates made a breakthrough as Jamie McLaughlin forced his way through the backfield and in for a 12-10 lead. They couldn’t hold the lead however as the Blitz managed a touchdown of their own with about 6 minutes to go. The last minutes of the game were nailbiting as the Pirates forced their way close to the Blitz goal, but just couldn’t find a way to beat the Londoners the defence.

The final score was 16-12 to London Blitz, a four point win, just like last year.

The Blitz go on to play in the Britbowl Final in Leeds on 5th October where they will meet their local Rivals, London Warriors, again.

We’ve reached the play-off stage of the American Football season and EK Pirates, as winners of the Premier North Division hosted the 4th team from the South, Bristol Aztecs, a team they’d never beaten before. The game was played on 15th September at Glasgow University’s Garscube Complex.

The Pirates had the better of the first half and scored three touchdowns, the highlight being Ryan Hunter’s 90 yard run on the final play before half time. The second half was closer as the Pirates brought on some of their back-up players. Both teams scored once in the half and the final score was Pirates 26 – Aztecs 6.

The Pirates semi-final match will be a repeat of last year’s fixture at the same stage, London Blitz will be the visitors to Hamilton Rugby Club. Kick-off will be 1200 on Sunday 22nd.

While I was at Braidholm on 7th September I stayed on for this National League game.

Both teams had lost their opening two fixtures of the season, so this was important. It was the visitors from the Borders who were able to break away from the foot of the table. Selkirk dominated the first half, kept up the pressure in the second, and won by 45-10.

This event, at Braidholm on 7th September, was supposed to be a three team tournament. However the Wales team pulled out at the last minute leaving only Scotland and England.

As the English were preparing for forthcoming  European Championships in Bordeaux it was agreed to play three games between the remaining teams, sticking to the tournament format. I didn’t get a note of the final scores, but England won all three comfortably.

The Final match of the Scottish Aussie Rules club season was played at Linlithgow Rugby Club on 31st August, between Glasgow Sharks and Edinburgh Bloods.

The Sharks had qualified first for the final as the most successful team of the season, but it was the Bloods who started in dominating fashion, pretty well deciding the result with 8 goals in the first quarter. The rest of the game was more of an even contest, but the Bloods held on easily to take their 5th consecutive Grand Final by 123 points to 57.
