The S1 final saw a comfortable win for Westhill Academy over Greenwood Academy, and in the S2/3 final North Berwick High School were the winners against Greenwood.

Greenwood put up a much stronger performance in the S4/5 final and actually had the lead in the second half before their opponents, Westhill again, pulled off the win.

The European Nations Championships in Antwerp are getting closer, and the Scotland women teams’ first preparation games are against Ireland at Peffermill.

Scotland v IrelandThe Irish started the first game much more quickly and shocked the Scots by scoring from a penalty corner with barely a minute elapsed. It took a while for Scotland to get up to speed, but they steadily forced their way into the game and ended the first half level after Nikki Kidd scored from a penalty corner. Scotland were much better in the second half and looked to have secured the win thanks to a second short corner goal from Kidd. However, with only about two minutes left the Irish managed to force over a short range goal and the game finished 2-2.

The second game was played on the 11th June with a change of weather as rain came in. Due to a colours clash, Scotland played in training bibs.

Once again Ireland opened the scoring early in the game, but the Scots came back with goals from Nikki Kidd and Linda Clement before half time. Ireland pulled level again in the second half before two goals were added by Ali Bell and Holly Cram for a 4-2 Scotland lead. Not giving up, the Irish pulled another one back but couldn’t find an equaliser before the end.

Scotland Women now face a four game series against South Africa, beginning on Friday.

Edinburgh Wolves v Glasgow TigersWith only one win from four games, Edinburgh Wolves started as second favourites when they hosted the previously unbeaten Tigers at Meadowbank on 9th June. However, a decision by the Tigers to start a number of back up players in the first quarter was costly as the Wolves offence showed some form. The Tigers conceded three touchdowns in the quarter and found themselves 20 points behind. They started a comeback after this but the Wolves were making fewer mistakes than when we’ve seen them earlier in the season, and had enough to hold on for a 26-16 win.

East Kilbride PiratesThis was the Pirates first home game of the season at Hamilton on 2nd June, and a significant fixture as the Mustangs arrived with a perfect record for the season, having already won all four of their Premier Division games.

The Pirates weren’t to be impressed however, and started with Iain Dick running in a touchdown from the first play from scrimmage. Three more TDs followed and East Kilbride led by 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. Doncaster finally got their passing game going in the second and they managed a couple of scores. The Pirates produced two more of their own though and they led 41-12 at half time.

Two more touchdowns for East Kilbride in the second half, including the one scored by Ryan Mccluskey with the pass reception shown below, which led to a final score of 53-12 and confirmation that East Kilbride are favourites to win the division.

Sports photographers know that referees are on the field mostly to get in the way of decent action pictures. What you don’t expect is for the ref to get in the way while you’re taking a team photo…..
