Watsonians Ladies v Erskine Stewarts MelvilleHockey’s Cup Finals day at Peffermill on 25th May gave us four thrilling games played in fine sunshine.

The Womens Plate Final was first, finishing at 1-1 between Edinburgh rivals Erskine Stewarts Melville and Watsonians. For the first time running penalties were used for the tie-breaker and ESM secured the win, thanks mostly to a fine goalkeeping display.

Hillhead goalIn the Mens Plate Final, Division 1 team Hillhead started as favourites against 2nd Division Aberdeen GSFP and they were 3-0 up by half time. However, Aberdeen fought back strongly in the second half, scoring twice and having a penalty claim denied, before Hillhead came back to life and forged ahead for a flattering 7-2 victory.

The Womens Cup Final featured Clydesdale Western and Edinburgh University, and few in the crowd were prepared to predict a winner. An early goal for Western was countered by two for the University before half time and then a third just after the restart. Western then turned on the power and scored four goals in a row. The students pulled one back but couldn’t find an equaliser, Western finally winning by 5 goals to 4.

If that was exciting, the Mens Final was its equal. Grove Menzieshill started the game by scoring in the first minute, only to have league champions Kelburne equalise 1 minute later and take the lead on 5 minutes. The action kept coming. Menzieshill scored twice more before half time, then Kelburne hit a second half equaliser. The winning goal came with less than a minute left, and it was Menzieshill who took the up by 4-3, denying Kelburne a repeat of their League and Cup double.

I had a tour of the new facility being built for the Commonwealth Games recently, along with Scott Baird and Jorge Alcover, vice-president of the EHF.

The facility is well on the way to being finished, with the astroturf almost ready to be rolled out. Hopefully it will be in use next season. I expect I’ll be spending a lot of time here in the future, so I’m glad it looks so good.

Edinburgh Wolves v Gateshead Senators

For Edinburgh Wolves second home game of the year Gateshead Senators were the visitors to Meadowbank on 19 May.

Things started poorly for the home team, they conceded a safety early in the first quarter. Things got worse from there. Gateshead took control of the game and they went on to score four touchdowns, although without adding an extra point from any of them. Final score: Wolves 0 Senators 26.

In the National Division North, Gateshead remain unbeaten with 2 wins and a tie, Edinburgh have 1 win but 3 losses.

The Pirates, as reigning division champions, were hot favourites for this game and three touchdowns in the first quarter were enough to secure the win. Another two scores were run in later and the final score was 34-0.

East Kilbride have now won their opening two fixtures of the year and have a three week wait for their first home game against Doncaster Mustangs on June 2nd. The Trojans have now lost three in a row.

Scotland under 21 v IndiaThe final game of the Indian girls visit was played at Titwood on Friday evening, 10th May.

India scored the opening goal early in the game. From then, Scotland spent most of the game on attack and certainly had a better share of the game than they did on the previous Sunday. There were no more goals in the game however and India finished with a 1-0 win.

Thanks to India for their visit, I enjoyed watching them play.

The Indian girls touring team traveled to the sunshine and scenery of Forthbank on Tuesday 7th May to play a strong team representing Scotland senior women.

The pace of the Scottish team was too much for India early and a 3-0 lead was built by half time. Scotland’s grip on the game loosened in the second half as the visitors pulled back two goals before a final score for the Scots made the final score 4-2.

Scotland under 21 v IndiaScotland under 21 women played a visiting India Junior team at Titwood on 5 May 2013.

This was a very entertaining game, with the Indian girls showing great skill and speed. They scored once in each half and hit the post twice too. The Scottish girls took a while to get up to the Indian girls pace, but managed to pull the score back to 2-1 late in the second half.

In the Women’s District Cup Final over on the main pitch Orkney took a 2-0 first half lead. Their opponents, MC Clydesdale Western IV, fought back hard but it wasn’t until the last 5 minutes when a flurry of goals arrived. The emotional Orkney team held on to win 3-2.

By the last two games the early morning sunshine was a distant memory. Hillhead men’s 2nd team completed a treble for their club as they won the District Plate Final. They beat Aberdeen GSFP 3-2 thanks to a late winner in what was the closest game of the day.
