The last game of the day at Peffermill was the Mens Plate semi-final between first division Hillhead and second division Granite City Wanderers.

Hillhead had the better of the early play and they took a 2-0 lead into half time. Wanderers came back with a great performance after the break, pulling back the two goals and then taking the lead on a Hillhead own goal. Hillhead piled on the pressure and were finally rewarded with a very late equaliser. An epic penalty shoot-out followed which was finally won by Hillhead by 16 goals to 15.

Western actionAfter last weekends men’s cup semi finals, it was the ladies turn at Peffermill on 20th April, with four teams from the top five in the league involved.

The first game was a tight affair between Clydesdale Western and CALA Edinburgh. Both sides struggled to put together a flowing performance, with the Western girls appearing particularly off-song. Nevertheless they managed to find some improvement in the second half and won by the only goal of the game.

Edinburgh Uni player/coach Sam JudgeThe second game, in contrast, was a thriller. Grove always start as favourites these days but it was Edinburgh Uni who had an early 1-0 lead. Grove equalised just before half time, but the students quickly scored again after the restart. It looked like they could hold on for the win until Grove found a late equaliser. In the penalty shoot-out that followed Uni let an early lead slip again, but finally won by 6 penalties to 5 once it reached sudden death.

Finals day will be back at Peffermill on 25th May.

Blackhawks at WolvesThe senior British American Football season has begun. These two teams, who were leading lights in Division 2 North last season, met on 14th April at Meadowbank. Following league reconstruction they are now playing in National League North.

First games of the season are always scrappy, and a near gale blowing down the ground made things even harder. The Blackhawks had a halftime lead of 7-0 on the strength of a running touchdown after an Edinburgh interception. In the second half it the Blackhawks stronger running game made the difference as the Wolves passing offence struggled in the wind. Clyde Valley scored two more rushing touchdowns, including one from 60 yards, then added a safety and a field goal, and finished with a 26-0 win.

TMenzieshill v Inverleithhe semi-finals of the men’s Scottish Cup were played at Peffermill on 13 April. In a change from previous years the date for these had been changed and they were held separately from the women’s competition.

In the first game, Grove Menzieshill faced Inverleith, who had to field a weakened team as some players were unavailable on what had been scheduled as a weekend off. In the circumstances they put up a good performance to lose by only 3-0 to what has been one of the form sides in the country recently.

The second game was between Kelburne, cup holders and champions elect, and Western Wildcats. When these teams met here in the final two years ago the game was a thriller, with Wildcats taking a surprise victory. This game was different however. Kelburne demonstrated why they are the dominant club in Scottish hockey and romped to a 9-0 victory.

Haggis Cup FinalThe Haggis Cup is an annual pre-season tournament hosted in Scotland. This year it was played at Peffermill on 13th April, and it gave me a busy day as I was also shooting the two Hockey cup semi-finals on the adjacent pitch.

This year there were seven teams taking part in this years Haggis Cup, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen representing Scotland, with the visitors all coming from England, Manchester, Huddersfield, Tyne Tees and Wimbledon. The Glasgow team also brought players to make up two teams for a girls game.Haggis Cup Girls

At the end of the day Edinburgh Bloods retained the trophy, having built a big half time lead over Wimbledon Hawks in the final, then holding on against a second half comeback.

Western v Hillhead

This game played at Titwood on 7th April was a Scottish Cup quarter final.

As would be expected, Clydesdale Western, one of Scotland’s top clubs, were well on top throughout the game against their second division visitors. The Hillhead girls put up a good performance however, and the final scoreline of 4-0 to Western reflects this.

Their first half was a close affair, but Scotland scored twice and kept a clean sheet thanks to a penalty flick save. The second half saw an even stronger show from the Scots as they extended the lead to 6-0 by the end.

On Saturday the Scottish boys started strongly again and had an early 2-0 lead. This time however Wales pulled a goal back before half time. The Welsh pushed hard in the second half but couldn’t find an equalising goal. Final score: 2-1 to Scotland.

Scotland under 18s v Wales,6 April 2013, Forthbank, StirlingThe Scottish girls had played well the previous weekend, beating England to take the bronze medal in a four team tournament. It looked like they were going to have another good game on Friday when they opened the scoring after only 3 minutes. This turned out to be the only goal of the game however as both teams failed to score further.

On Saturday Scotland showed their strength and led 2-0 at half time. Coach Mark Ralph challenged the girls to score 3 more in the second half, and they duly obliged, before the Welsh scored a late consolation. Final score: 5-1 to Scotland.
