My first chance to see some shinty this season, I made it over to Yoker for a double header at Glasgow Mid Argyll.

The first game featGMA v Kilmoryured the GMA second team playing Col Glen in a South Division 2, the fixture having been switched from Glendaruel. The GMA team features a number of youngsters and has been struggling in the league so far. In the first half GMA scored early, only for Col Glen to come back and lead 2-1. The second half belonged to the visitors as they piled on the pressure and finished with a 7-1 win.

GMA’s first team game was a first round tie in the AJG Parcels Celtic Society Cup, with Kilmory providing the opposition. GMA have been in dominant league form in South Division 1 so far this season and showed why here, racing to a four goal lead early on and winning in the end by 9-0.

I managed to get to Auchenhowie in time to see the last few minutes of this Scottish Cup tie. The team from the top half of Division 1 demonstrated the gap in quality to the top half of Division 2, as the Wildcats cruised to a win by 8-0.

Tigers v NTUAnother Sunday, another long trip to Glasgow for an English university team. On 17th March the Renegades from Nottingham Trent University came to Garscube for a semi final of the National Challenge Trophy.

NTU started their first drive with a big gain on a pass play, but weren’t able to score. This set the pattern for the game, neither side was able to make a break through and the first half finished 0-0. The Tigers had a chance to open the scoring early in the third quarter but an attempted field goal fell just short. Finally in the fourth quarter NTU managed to break the deadlock as their quarterback ran in a touchdown. A second running touchdown followed on their next drive to take the score to 14-0. Glasgow were unable to come back from there and the Renegades go on to play in the final at Leeds next weekend.

GU TigersThe university American Football season has reached the play-off stage and Glasgow hosted a quarter final in the trophy competition at Garscube on 10th March, a day on constant change between sunshine and snow. The visitors had to travel a long way, the Buccaneers came all the way from Buckinghamshire New University.
The Buccaneers had the best of the early play, scoring a touchdown in each of the two quarters, only for Glasgow to score just before half time, pulling back to 12-8 down. Glasgow scored again early in the third to take the lead and then managed to hold on to the end, the Buccaneers last chance being lost when they fumbled possession away with seconds left. Final score: 16-12 to the Tigers.

Two games played at Bellahouston on 3rd March completed the round of 32 ties of this seasons Scottish Cup.

The first game was an all 2nd division clash between Uddingston and Aberdeen Grammar FPs. The Aberdonians opened the scoring from a penalty corner, but couldn’t hold back Uddingston who went on to win by 4-1.

In the second game, an under-strength Carnegie side came through from Dunfermline to face the reigning cup holders Kelburne. Carnegie got their consolation in early as they scored from a penalty corner before halftime. This was their only scoring opportunity of the game however, and they were swept aside by the power and speed of the Kelburne attack. The final score was 15-1.

Lenzie v CumbernauldThese local rivals met in a West Region Div 2 game at Lenzie on 2nd March.

Lenzie, who hold a much higher league position, started favourites and took the lead early on with a penalty. Cumbernauld fought back hard however, scoring two tries before half time and another soon after, to lead 19-3. A Lenzie comeback followed and they got to within a point before Cumbernauld added a final penalty and clinched a 22-18 win.

The win keeps Cumbernauld clear of the relegation zone, while the loss has dented Lenzie’s promotion hopes.

Two of the top five teams in the First Division met at Forthbank on 2nd March.Grange v Menzieshill

Despite playing hard, neither side produced many chances in the first half which finished goalless. Menzieshill opened the scoring in the second only for Grange to equalise from a penalty corner. The final few minutes were played at a frantic pace but neither side could find a winner.

The draw leaves both teams comfortably in the top five as we go into the split second phase of the season, although it has left Grange further behind in their quest to unseat Kelburne as champions.
